Coding Our Future

In an era defined by rapid technological advancement, “Coding Our Future” aims to equip young learners with the essential skills in coding and robotics. Through hands-on workshops and interactive learning sessions, we inspire students to embrace STEM subjects and explore the vast possibilities of technology. By making these subjects accessible and engaging, we help spark curiosity and ambition in learners, preparing them for the demands of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR).

Our programs are designed to break down barriers and make technology education accessible to all, particularly in under-resourced township and rural areas. By integrating practical coding and robotics projects into the curriculum, we provide learners with real-world applications of their skills, fostering a deeper understanding and passion for STEM.

The Challenge

In response to the growing need for technology education in South African township and rural schools, where limited resources hinder students’ ability to engage with STEM subjects, the Bonamelo Melisizwe Foundation launched a Coding and Web Development pilot programme in December 2023, which led to the inaugural Tech Week promoting Robotics in 2024. This initiative was designed to provide high school learners with hands-on experience in coding and robotics, helping to bridge the skills gap and inspire interest in technology-driven careers and entrepreneurship.

The overarching goal of the programme is to foster inclusive and equitable access to quality tech education, equipping students with the skills necessary for success in the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR). The initiative aligns with the Foundation’s mission to empower communities through education and digital skills development.

The key objectives of the programme are:

  • To involve young learners in interactive coding and robotics projects that build their technical skills and confidence in STEM subjects.

  • To actively engage students through mentorship and support, fostering leadership, innovation, and a sense of ownership in their educational journey.

  • To facilitate the development of practical skills, creativity, and entrepreneurial thinking, preparing students for future opportunities in the digital economy.

Our Approach

At the Bonamelo Melisizwe Foundation, we understand that bridging the digital divide requires more than just access to technology. Our approach to coding and robotics education focuses on creating an engaging and supportive learning environment where students from under-resourced communities can thrive. By offering hands-on workshops and interactive lessons, we make complex Tech concepts accessible and enjoyable, sparking a genuine interest in technology.

Collaboration is at the heart of our initiatives. We work closely with local schools, community leaders, and educational institutions to ensure our programmes meet the specific needs of the students we serve. This partnership-driven model allows us to create customized learning experiences that are both relevant and impactful. We aim to not only teach technical skills but also foster critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving abilities that students can apply in various aspects of their lives.

Mentorship plays a crucial role in our approach. By connecting students with experienced professionals and role models in the tech industry, we provide guidance and inspiration that extends beyond the classroom, help students navigate their educational journeys, offer support and encouragement that builds confidence and resilience. Through this mentorship, we nurture a new generation of tech leaders who are equipped to drive innovation in their communities.

Sustainability is a key pillar of our approach. We are committed to creating programmes that have a lasting impact, ensuring that the knowledge and skills students gain are retained and applied in meaningful ways. Our focus on long-term outcomes means that we continually evaluate and adapt our programmes to meet the evolving needs of the digital landscape, ensuring that our students are prepared for the future.
