Food Security – Backyard Farming
The Bonamelo Melisizwe Foundation promotes sustainable living through backyard farming. By equipping families with the tools and knowledge to grow their own food, we fight hunger, improve nutrition, and create income-generating opportunities in township communities.

Description

Growing Hope. One Garden at a Time.

In many of our communities, poverty and food insecurity are daily struggles. The Bonamelo Melisizwe Foundation’s Backyard Farming Programme is a grassroots response to hunger—empowering households to grow their own fresh, nutritious food right at home.

We believe that a small space can make a big difference.

🌾 What the Programme Offers:

Our goal is to support families and youth with:

  • Training in urban farming techniques (planting, composting, irrigation)

  • Starter garden kits (seeds, soil, tools, organic fertiliser)

  • Workshops on sustainable food production and nutrition

  • Assistance in turning gardens into income-generating micro-enterprises

Participants gain hands-on experience and learn how to farm efficiently in limited space—balconies, yards, containers, or community plots.

💚 Why It Matters:

  • Improves food security and reduces dependency on food parcels

  • Promotes healthy eating and better nutrition

  • Empowers families and youth with life skills and economic opportunity

  • Fosters environmental awareness and sustainable practices

  • Builds community resilience against poverty and rising food costs

We’re not just planting vegetables—we’re planting dignity, confidence, and self-reliance.
