Drowning Prevention

Floating Our Future

Floating Our Future is our visionary initiative designed to turn the tide on drowning among Ekurhuleni’s primary school learners. Recognizing that drowning is one of the leading causes of death for children aged 1 to 14—and considering that only 15% of South Africans can swim—this program offers essential water safety and learn-to-swim education tailored specifically for township communities. By equipping young learners with practical swimming skills and critical safety knowledge, we are empowering them to navigate aquatic environments with confidence. Ultimately, Floating Our Future lays the groundwork for a safer tomorrow, where every child can enjoy water-based activities with the assurance of knowing how to stay safe.

The Challenge

Drowning remains one of the leading causes of death among children worldwide, with those between the ages of 1 and 14 being most at risk. In South Africa, the situation is even more alarming, as reports indicate that only 15% of the population knows how to swim. This lack of swimming skills, coupled with limited access to water safety education, puts countless young lives in danger, particularly in township communities where proper swimming facilities and training are scarce. Without intervention, children continue to face preventable tragedies, reinforcing the urgent need for structured drowning prevention programs that equip them with lifesaving skills and awareness.

The key objectives of the program are:

  • Saving Lives: Reduce drowning incidents by equipping primary school learners with essential water safety knowledge and swimming skills.
  • Enhancing Water Safety Awareness: Educate children, teachers, and communities on the importance of water safety, risk prevention, and emergency response.
  • Teaching Lifelong Swimming Skills: Provide structured learn-to-swim programs that empower children with the confidence and ability to navigate aquatic environments safely.

Our Approach

Our approach to drowning prevention is rooted in proactive education, skill development, and community engagement. We recognize that drowning is a preventable tragedy, and our initiative focuses on equipping young learners with both the knowledge and practical skills they need to stay safe in and around water. By prioritizing primary school learners in township communities, we address the urgent need for water safety awareness in areas where access to swimming education is often limited.

At the heart of our program is a structured learn-to-swim initiative, where children are introduced to fundamental swimming techniques and survival skills. These sessions are conducted in a safe and supportive environment, allowing learners to build confidence in the water while mastering essential skills like floating, treading water, and basic strokes. Our instructors emphasize not only swimming ability but also situational awareness, ensuring that children can recognize and respond to potential drowning hazards.

Beyond swimming lessons, we incorporate water safety education into our curriculum to foster a deeper understanding of risk prevention. Through interactive workshops, demonstrations, and school-based learning, children are taught how to identify dangerous water conditions, practice safe behaviors near bodies of water, and perform basic rescue techniques when necessary. This holistic approach ensures that even those who may not become strong swimmers still develop an awareness of water safety principles.

Collaboration is key to sustaining our impact. We work closely with schools, parents, local organizations, and community leaders to promote a culture of water safety beyond the classroom. By integrating our drowning prevention program into school activities and community initiatives, we aim to create lasting change—ensuring that future generations grow up with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to enjoy water safely. Through these collective efforts, we are building a safer future, one learner at a time.
